How this is worked out

Every chlorine product says how strong it is on the label (10%, 12.5%, 6%, 65%…). We turn that strength into grams of chlorine and work out how much raises your pool by the gap you need.
Liquid chlorine and bleach leave a little salt behind; cal-hypo adds calcium; dichlor adds stabilizer. The answer tells you when that matters.
The product label always wins — if it says something different, follow the label.

Questions

Is household bleach the same as pool chlorine?

Yes — both are sodium hypochlorite. Use plain, unscented bleach, and pick its strength (6% or 8.25%) so the amount is right.

What chlorine level should I aim for?

It depends on your stabilizer: keep free chlorine at about 7.5% of stabilizer or more. With stabilizer 40, that is 3 ppm at least; 4–5 ppm is a comfortable aim.
